Catechism Review — An Examination of Conscience for Advent
Objective: Apply the sacrament of Penance through a brief examination of conscience.
Yesterday and on Day 1 you studied the sacrament of Penance. Today, briefly put it into practice. An examination of conscience is a prayerful review of how we have loved God and neighbor, measured against the commandments and the example of Christ. It is a fitting Advent exercise, since the season calls us to 'prepare the way of the Lord' by clearing the obstacles of sin from our hearts. Begin with a short prayer asking the Holy Spirit for light to see ourselves honestly. Then quietly consider: Have I loved God first? Have I been kind, honest, and generous to others? Where have I fallen short, and where can I begin again? This is not meant to make us anxious but hopeful — the whole point of self-examination is that mercy is waiting.
Discussion Questions
- 1Why is an examination of conscience meant to lead to hope, not anxiety?
Spend two quiet minutes in a simple examination of conscience using the USCCB guide; write down (privately) one area you wish to grow in this Advent.
