King David — Shepherd, Warrior, King
Objective: Analyze David as a historical and political figure who unified Israel and founded a lasting dynasty.
On Monday we met David the holy psalmist; today we study David the historical king and statesman. Whether or not every detail can be confirmed archaeologically, the biblical and historical picture is of a remarkable leader who turned a fractured people into a nation. David's genius was unification: he ended the rivalry between the northern and southern tribes, defeated Israel's enemies (the Philistines, including the legendary duel with Goliath), and chose Jerusalem — a neutral city belonging to no single tribe — as his capital, a brilliant political stroke that made it everyone's city. He established a royal court, a standing army, and the beginnings of an administration. Most lasting of all, he founded a dynasty: the 'House of David,' a royal line that, the prophets promised, would never truly end — a promise Christians see fulfilled when Jesus is born in David's city, Bethlehem, and called 'Son of David.' In 1993 archaeologists found the 'Tel Dan Stele,' an inscription that appears to mention the 'House of David,' giving outside evidence for his dynasty. David was not flawless — his reign included rebellion and family tragedy — but as a founder-king who welded a nation and a faith together in one city, his achievement shaped the next thousand years.
