Historical Figure: Charles Martel and the Battle of Tours (732)
Objective: Explain who Charles Martel was and why the Battle of Tours is considered a turning point.
Charles Martel — 'Charles the Hammer' — was the most powerful man in the Frankish kingdom in the early 700s. Though not a king himself, he held the real power as 'Mayor of the Palace,' commanding the Frankish armies while weak kings sat on the throne. After Muslim forces conquered Spain (711) and crossed the Pyrenees, raiding parties pushed north into Frankish lands. In 732 (some say 733), near the city of Tours in central France, Charles Martel met a Muslim army in battle. His disciplined Frankish infantry, formed into a tight defensive square, held firm against the cavalry charges, and the Muslim commander was killed; the raiders withdrew. The Battle of Tours has long been remembered as a great turning point — the moment, in the famous (if exaggerated) phrasing of later historians, when the Muslim advance into Western Europe was halted, keeping the Frankish heartland Christian. Modern historians debate how decisive that single battle really was; the raid may have been more of an expedition than a full invasion. But it certainly cemented Charles Martel's prestige and the power of his family. And that family matters enormously: Charles Martel was the grandfather of Charlemagne, the great emperor you will study next week. From the Hammer's victory grew the Carolingian dynasty that would re-found Western civilization. Charles Martel is thus a hinge between the Islamic expansion of this week and the Carolingian revival of the next.
